Steve Laffey Forgoes Gubernatorial Run

Former Cranston Mayor and Rhode Island U.S. Senate candidate Steve Laffey has just announced on WPRO that he will not be running for Governor of Rhode Island in 2010.  Anchor Rising has more details here.

This announcement comes as a surprise to many lawmakers and pundits who expected Laffey to run after the publishing of his book, his wave of talk-show appearances where he critiqued the handling of the state’s economy and his online fundraising on his website.

Laffey’s announcement means that the only Republican who has expressed interest in the race is State Representative Joe Trillo (former Republican and current Independent Lincoln Chafee is also rumored to be interested).  Click here for more information on the 2010 gubernatorial race in Rhode Island.

  1. The Providence Journal is reporting that Lincoln Chafee is “very, very seriously” considering a run for Governor.

If he runs, who can beat him?

  2. I heard from a high-level state house republican that Mr. Laffey’s personal finances are in ruin. That would be a logical reason for him not to run.
